Bulgaria is a country in South-Eastern Europe. The capital and the biggest city is Sofia. The national currency BGN is the Bulgarian lev. However, since the country has joined the European Union, the currency will change over to the euro in several years.
The population of Bulgaria is 7,8 million. Bulgaria's official language is Bulgarian and is the mother- tongue of 84.8% of the population. Bulgarian language is a Slavik language and it is related to languages like Serbian and Russian.
It borders the Black Sea to the east, Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north, mostly along the river Danube. The southwest of the country is mountainous with two alpine ranges – Rila and Pirin and further east are the lower but more extensive Rhodope Mountains. Rila mountain is crowned by the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula, peak Musala at 2925 meters (9,596 ft). The long range of the Balkan mountain runs west-east through the middle of the country, north of the famous Rose valley.
The Bulgarian Black Sea Coast covers the whole eastern border of Bulgaria. The region is an important centre of tourism during the summer, attracting tourists from the country and overseas. It has always tended to be the country's most popular tourist destination. The largest city on Bulgarian Black Sea Coast is Varna (also the third largest city in Bulgaria), located on the northern part of the coast. Another big city is Bourgas, located on the southern coast. The two cities' international airports, Varna Airport and Burgas Airport, are the main hubs servicing the region.
The climate is commonly considered (2000 to 2400 sun hours per year) to be the weather averaged over a long period of time, typically 30 years. There are four seasons: cold and sometimes moist winter with snowfalls and average temperature of 0°C, warm and sometimes rainy spring, hot, dry summer with average temperature of 23°C and warm sunny autumn.
